Probably not. The original update was free in the sense of "If you ask in an
Apple Store, they'll give you the CD." The free upgrade program was only for
a limited time, however. Once it ended, you had to buy 10.1 in the box, just
like every other version.

Hmmm ... you're knocking some cobwebs off my memory. I am now recollecting something about "media charges" for the "free" updater (about $20 IIRC) when ordered from Apple, but a limited number of CDs were shipped to Apple Stores and resellers, and given away without charge. I also seem to recall that Apple was encouraging people to share these CDs. Once the updater CDs were gone, the only option was the full boxed edition. The updater was never available online due to bandwidth costs (it was a massive updater).
