Create a new disposable user account, and see how Safari behaves with
applets under that account.  The problem might be broken Safari preferences
or configuration info, though that's just a guess.

You might also monitor your network traffic with tcpdump, and see if it
makes sense given the applets you're loading.  Or compare Safari's traffic
with Firefox's traffic, since one works and the other doesn't.
