Combo boxes with sub boxes?

Not Mac-specific, but some students are writing a project in which users will have to pick a category for data they're entering. (These are questions for a Quiz Bowl team, so basically we have to carve up all of human knowledge into a reasonable ontology.)

Most categories have subcategories, and many subcategories have subsubcategories. (Language Arts -> English Lit -> Poetry, or Language Arts -> English Lit -> Drama, for example.)

I thought about something like a menu, but can you put a menu somewhere in a Swing app outside the menu bar and, if so, should you?

Anyone have a UI suggestion? We're currently leaning toward a list of combo boxes where setting the first changes the choices in the second, and setting the second changes the choices in the third, etc.
