Are there any messages in your system console?
Run the application:
/Applications/Utilities/Console
and look in "Console Log" when you try to start your app.
[CS] no message at all.
Exactly how are you starting your app:
1) command-line in Terminal?
2) double-clicked jar?
3) double-clicked app-bundle?
[CS] java -jar abc.jar is how I start my application

Restore the backup you made before upgrading.
No backup? Search the archives for "downgrade" or "1.4.2 update 2" and
read what other people have done in order to downgrade. You're not the
only person who had trouble with 1.4.2U2.
I don't have a specific URL in the list archives, but a search should yield
something fairly recent. Search the archives here:
<http://search.lists.apple.com>
There is no Apple-supported downgrade, just like every other system
component or security update. The best you can do is to alter a receipt
from the install that fools a previous installer into forcing an "upgrade".
[CS] I tried coping Update 1 from another OSX. I renamed the existing Update 2 and copied all directories with "java" in its names from Update 1 to Update 2.
Didn't do anything with the receipt. What should I do?

Yes, there are other dependencies. Specifically, private frameworks may be
altered, and you'd have to know what they were, or read the BOM (Bill Of
Materials) in the receipt in order to figure them out. But if you're
mucking with receipts, it's far easier to just force it to a bogus old
version and reinstall the version you want.
[CS] I don't understand.
You mean, I just need to play with receipts (i.e. delete the Update 2 receipt and no need to play with other *java* directories), and then I can re-install Java from the base version (if I can find it) to Update 1?
