Do you see any messages in the Terminal window?

Does the process hang, crash, or what?

If you open another Terminal window and type:
  ps -ax

what is the state of the 'java' process?

That's unlikely to work.

I suggest searching the Java-Dev archives for "receipt" and/or 1.4.2 Update
2, and/or other qualifying keywords. To answer your question, that's
exactly what I would do, then I would read the posts it found, decide which
ones had specific instructions, and post a list of URLs to the list.

But you can do all those steps yourself, rather than me doing them for you
and simply giving you the results.

If you can't find anything about how to manipulate the receipts, or find no
hints of other people's problems with 1.4.2U2, then ask again. But I'm
pretty sure those posts are in the archives, because I remember that some
people DID have problems, and one tactic was to manipulate the receipts
and/or the framework's own version plist, followed by a reinstall.
