before all this use of ps(1) and grep(1) gets too ugly:
[NSApp orderFrontCharacterPalette:self];
this is fairly easy to translate into Cocoa-Java. the problems being (a)
that's now abandonware, and (b) i found when i used this that sometimes
the focus would get confused, and i'd have to manual move focus away and
give it back to my original application.
