Hi Steve,

Depends on which shell you're using.

I asked a long time ago which shell people recommend on Mac OS X.  Someone recommended zsh and I've been happy using that ever since.  If you do use zsh, then you could put your aliases and other environmental stuff all in ~/.zshrc.  Alternatively, as the person who recommended it to me suggested, break them out into separate files in your Library, which each gets called by ~/.zshrc

If you're interested, let me know and I'll send you a zip containing examples.
