Re: New to Mac, New to Java

Steve:

OS X is based on the BSD variants of Unix (I believe mostly FreeBSD) thus virtually every tool available for Linux is available for OS X. FWIW, I run X11 with OpenMotif alongside Aqua.

In any case, whether you use X or not, the terminal application can have it's preferences set so that it uses the shell of your choice. On Linux that's typically bash. By default, OS X uses tcsh, I believe. To set it up as bash, open a terminal, go to the "Terminal" menu bar item, when it comes down click on prferences, and then click on the radio button to "use this command", and then put in /bin/bash.

When your next terminal session starts, it should read your .profile and you'll be in business.

In linux there is a .profile file in which I can set up short cut commands, example ll = ls -al
Is there a way to do that on the mac?

Is there a more appropriate mailing list I should be on to ask system questions?
