Although Bill's method works, I leave Terminal Preferences set to
"Execute the default login shell using /usr/bin/login" and then set
my default login shell with NetInfo Manager. To do this:
* start Apple's NetInfo Manager
* select "users" in the leftmost browser column
* select your (short) userID in the next column to the right.
* scroll the lower frame until you see "shell" in the lower right
column
* enter the path to your favorite shell to the right of the shell
keyword
You will probably have to click the lock in the lower left corner of
the window to make any changes and you will need administrative
privileges on your machine to do this. However, one advantage is that
you can log into your machine remotely and automatically get your
favorite shell using that route as well.

Jerry

OS X is based on the BSD variants of Unix (I believe mostly

for OS X. FWIW, I run X11 with OpenMotif alongside Aqua.
In any case, whether you use X or not, the terminal application can
have it's preferences set so that it uses the shell of your choice.
On Linux that's typically bash. By default, OS X uses tcsh, I
believe. To set it up as bash, open a terminal, go to the
"Terminal" menu bar item, when it comes down click on prferences,
and then click on the radio button to "use this command", and then
put in /bin/bash.
When your next terminal session starts, it should read
your .profile and you'll be in business.

In linux there is a .profile file in which I can set up short cut
commands, example ll = ls -al
Is there a way to do that on the mac?
Is there a more appropriate mailing list I should be on to ask
system questions?
