It's confusing to me at times too. But generally in a Swing application there is main thread different from the launch/main one.

One guy told me that there's no guarantee that all threads in a particular group may be reported. Is there truth to that???

That doesn't seem right but you might want to take a look at this. It's what I messed with for this at one point.

I took the invokeLater() out of the code and it STILL isn't showing up in the list of threads. I also tried it on Linux and had the same results, so I must assume it's something I'm doing.

I thought before it was invokeAndWait()? This is still sounding like SwingUtilities, the javadoc might be worth a look,

What exactly is it that you are doing that you think is creating a new thread?
