Thanks to Sciss for pointing out that I needed to use unicode with *standard fonts* (or logical fonts) to get phi and psi (and presumably my en-dash) on Mac OS X. That works fine. I almost tried it, but was exauhsted by the time I thought of it and wary of Windows support (it's a cross-platform app). Still need to check it on a Windows.
