BTW, I'd be glad too if Apple told us when they are going to release a working JAI with native libraries for Mac Intel and compatible with 10.4 :-)
I don't think that native libs give a big advantage in file i/o (I don't think they are ever used for that), but they should make a difference for image elaboration
(otherwise they wouldn't release native libs, isn't it?)
