Re: Blinking window

I filed a bug about this blinking/strobing behavior. I see it in our java applets. It started happening with java 1.5, and perhaps the latest 1.4 as well. I included a couple movie files in my report of two different applets flashing away.

rdar://4397067/ (note: only works for Apple employees)

Even though the applets themselves work, the flashing behavior makes them essentially unusable. One of our developers went so far as to replace all of the GIF images with PNG's. However, that didn't seem to help. It *maybe* made it so that it doesn't always happen. It's very odd. Sometimes the applet loads and it doesn't flash at all, and other times it loads and constantly flashes.

In any event, I recommend you file a bug about this, as I am reasonably certain this is Apple's problem and not the Java developer's problem. We have at least four different applets written by four different people, which all experience the same problem. The problem does not exist with any of these applets on Windows with any version of Sun's plugin. The more people who file bugs with Apple about this, the better the chance that Apple will pay attention to the reports and fix it.

I have a text editing application (Thinker) that does its

Doug Engelbart's NLS system of yore. I never saw
a way to use TextArea's. Anyway, after the transition
to Java 1.4 the full main window blinks every once
and a while while typing. I have tried to isolate
the cause (suspecting some interaction with the timer
driven process that blinks the text cursor) and wonder
if anyone has seen this and might know in general what
might cause it.

The blink is a complete window erase and redraw including
all the buttons and window dressing.

I cannot produce small units of code that demonstrate
it, and the application is large and poorly structured
(proving my axiom that one can write Fortran programs
in any language) having converted from Amiga -> Mac ->
Windows -> Java/Swing.

Sorry about the lack of specifics, I am asking only
if someone has seen this <blink> behavior, and if so what
caused it.
