The 10.3.9 / QT 7.0.4 update problem seems to be a combination of an
extremely old JavaApplicationLauncher in my package, and the new
release of a library that for some reason the launcher couldn't load
under 10.3.9 (but evidently can under 10.4.x).
I was using a very old launcher to keep compatibility with 10.1/10.2
platforms, but since I've moved to requiring Java 1.4 or later anyway,
this isn't really an issue any longer, so my best answer is likely to
re-release with the universal binary launcher, which did work (and
also works on the most recent OS).
Thanks very much to Jeremy Wood who helped me diagnose it quickly,
easing my lack of a 10.3.9 box to test with.
