Are the intel based Macs going to use the Sun JVM or still
some custom Apple JVM? ... I've personally found the
Apple JVM to be significantly slower than x86 JVM
or pretty much any Sun JVM on any platform.
I don't know if the Apple JVM is any slower than the Sun JVM on
calculations. The slowness seems to be on GUI operations, particularly AWT
(see www.segal.org/java/CanvasTable3/). GUI operations would need to be
Apple-specific since the GUI objects are different, so Apple will still need
to be in the loop for JREs.
On Windows, the Microsoft JVM is way faster than the Sun JVM on AWT,
presumably due to native integration. Apple should have the same advantage
that Microsoft had and should be able to make its GUI work faster. Since
Microsoft is now out of Java Apple should be able to have the fastest Java
GUI.
Apple has made huge progress in stamping out GUI bugs in the past few
months. If they tackle GUI speed now they can have the best Java GUI on the
market. This seems like a good way to invest some profits to produce
quality that will get people to choose Apple to get the best performance.
