Java Swing and Quartz

For a school programming assignment I need to turn off double buffering. However Swing double buffering can't be used, and thus can't be turned off, because Quartz double buffering is used instead. So the normal code doesn't work:

RepaintManager currentManager =  RepaintManager.currentManager(c);
currentManager.setDoubleBufferingEnabled(false);

Have any ideas?
