<x-tad-smaller> I would use Launch Services API to get at this information via JNI and</x-tad-smaller>

Hmmmmm...

Why do you advise this? Are you just providing an alternative, or are there hidden pitfalls that I don't know about?

As Martin just pointed out, I'm not familiar with an API for Launch Services. I opened up the trusty JavaBrowser just now, and didn't find anything promising when I searched for "Launch" or even "LS"... so I'm under the impression there's no Java API to query this value. (Please correct me if I'm wrong?)

If there's not already a set of classes to help me gather this info... and if I have a lightweight handy-dandy XML parser... (and my Java is much sharper than my C), then it seems more time-efficient (in my case) to parse the XML file... unless there are particular hazards/risks involved?

Regards,
Jeremy
