The one I was using was 14,568 bytes long.  Doing a 'strings -a' on it
revealed nothing that would indicate a version number, unfortunately.

...interesting, I hadn't thought of that.

I can say with confidence that swapping out the 14,568 byte stub with
the 47,768 byte fat file stub fixed the problem.

The part that confuses and still frets on my brain is that 10.4.x
works fine, with any combination of QuickTime and stub.  However,
since it works fine with the new one as well, I'm just transitioning
to it, because I've had to start requiring Java 1.4+ anyway, and OS X
10.1 can't run my app anymore.  :(
