Re: Printing on 10.3.9 (fixed)

There's a customer using our software to print. ...
We first prompt the user with our own page layout dialog; this works fine. Then we invoke the system's print dialog (and from there the user actually initiates the print).

This user sees our page layout dialog, but is unable to get to the system's print dialog.

We finally figured this out... (several disgruntled customers later...) So if anyone sees or hears similar symptoms, here's what we found...

Steps to reproduce:
1. Go into your Library/Preferences/ folder
2. Grab the com.companyName.ProductName.plist file for your application. (This file is written by the Mac OS.)
3. Change its permission to 'No Access'
4. Launch your application.
5. Try to print once. (You can press "cancel" here.)
6. Try to print again.

The second time the print dialog will flicker on screen and then hide itself, and most items in the Application menu are disabled (including "Quit" and "About XYZ...").
You can repeat step 6, but it won't help.

Other info:
Our customer reported that running "Disk Utility" to repair disk permission did not fix the problem. I'm unable to test this, because every time I try to run that feature Disk Utility gives me the error: "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."

Deleting the culprit plist file does not always fix the problem. (In 1 out of 3 scenarios it fixed the problem; I'm not exactly sure what the rules are regarding this.)

The best solution is to go straight to that file and restore its permissions. Either using the Finder or using the Terminal.

We assume this happened because of how the customer installed our software; probably they used Apple Remote Desktop and somehow installed a copy with bad permissions across a whole lab.

This is all based on OS 10.3.9 machines.

Is this a known issue?
(I don't like filing bugs with Apple unless I have to.)
