An app I wrote some time ago saves pictures (generated by scientific
computation) as JPEG, GIF, or PNG.
For JPEG I use code from James R. Weeks and BioElectroMech
(www.obrador.com - email@hidden), for GIF by Jef Poskanzer
http://www.acme.com/java/ and for PNG by David ?
(email@hidden). All these references are 4-5 years old now -
you may need to Google a bit.
The app also prints OK in color using standard Java 1.2 stuff.
To check if the App behaves correctly with more modern/your
equipment, download it from
www.maths.anu.edu.au/~briand/chaos
Should be OK - it's in use in quite a few places on Mac/Windows/Linux
