It is a standard class, however I have already searched the sun forums and
haven't found a single reference.

Then ask the question yourself. Sun's forums are read/write, not read-only.
I asked another question about GroupLayout and didnt get a useful reply back, it seems hardly anyone is using it at the moment.
Indentation is more applicable to OSX layouts than Windows layouts so I was
hoping somebody would have given it a go here.

GroupLayout is a Java 6 standard class. It won't be used a lot on Mac OS
X, because Java 6 is still only in preview, and under NDA.
Grouplayout is also available backported to Java 5 (https://swing-layout.dev.java.net/). If you are doing any Swing work I would definently recommend giving it a go.

IIRC, GroupLayout is also included with NetBeans. So you might ask on a
NetBeans support forum, too.
yeah, but matisse (within Netbeans) doesnt use INDENT
And there's a note (in the comments) on using INDENT instead of gaps:

Thanks, the poster seems to be saying similar to me, Ill try that.
I don't see why indentation would be less applicable to Windows layouts.
If a layout is complex enough to benefit from indents (as distinct from
gaps), then it will benefit from them on any platform. Visual clarity is
visual clarity regardless of platform.
There is not the same pressure to develop Windows applications to specific guidelines as there is on OSX. Indentation is awkward to implement currently, I'm looking at because
Im trying to replicate a panel in The Apple HIG. Visual Clarity is superceded by adherance to the guidelines, adding indentation to Windows form when it is not the norm would not be viewed
as improving visual clarity by users of that platform. For example iTunes looks fine on OSX, but on Windows I find it uncomfortable to use because it does not look like a Windows application.
