The performance of 1.6 over 1.5 is much better, plus bug fixes (and probably some bug additions, too :-) )

Except when it's not. On Windows, we've noticed that some of the optimizations they made to the way synchronization works appear to be based on heuristic assumptions. The trouble with those optimizations is that if your code happens to be the opposite of the common case, you lose. We actually see lower performance in a few critical sections of our software in 1.6 (vs 1.5 and earlier) due to these changes.
