Subject: Re: looking for laptop to do java development
I am using MacBook 2.16 Ghz with Leopard and VMFusion for J2ME
development for 6 months. Instead of Linux, I have to use XP as a
guest, since software I do targeted specifically to Nokia devices. So,
I have to use Nokia emulators that are WIndows only. I use NetBeans 6
with mobility pack in XP. With the stock 1GB of RAM and 512 MB for
guest OS any Java app is incredibly slow to start and barely usable.
However, with 4GB of RAM and 1 GB for guest OS it is actually working
very well and speedy.
I have actually managed to make NetBeans to compile my Nokia specific
J2ME apps natively in Leopard with dummy jar stubs and "preverify"
from Phone ME project. It requires some manual work to install
Mobility pack into NetBeans on Leopard and install proper stubs, but
it is doable. So, when I can live without debugging, I use this setup
on Leopard. If I need debugging on Nokia Emulator, I fire up VMFusion
with
XP.
One more piece of advice. If you are going to make plain MIDP 2.0 and
CLDC 1.1 apps, you can also make it work natively on Leopard including
debugging from NetBeans. However, any extra JSRs, and you are going to
"compile only" mode.
Best
