Yes, that is a serious problem. The MacBinary format itself has poor support for any filenames that can't be stored as MacRoman. It has no support at all for filenames longer than 63 bytes, or files larger than 4 GB. Those things didn't exist when the MacBinary format was defined, and the world has changed a lot since then. 4 GB used to be a large box filled with spinning hard drives. Now it's a fraction of a pocket-sized music player.


I don't have a simple answer for the filename problem, so you might be better off with the sequestered resource-forks produced by the 'ditto' command. It all depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
