At this point I expect that Sun will release Java 7 before Apple ever
release Java 6 on OS X, and I'm not holding my breath that Apple ever
will release Java 6 (they've been teasing us for far too long).
Setting pessimism aside, I've had a release of Java 6 running on my G4
under OS 10.4 (Tiger), so I hope they would release at least some
version of Java 6 for PPC. This was almost certainly 32-bit.
At Java One 2007 at one presentation I saw, Sun acknowledged that there
is a performance hit to using 64-bit Java (related to 64-pointers). They
were working on a different pointer handling scheme to eliminate the
performance hit, so it may not be available until Java 7. I'm not sure
about how Apple feels about 64-bit Java applications running slower than
32-bit ones, given all the praise they've had for the 64-bit performance
of Leopard. I thought the message was that Leopard runs 64-bit
applications even on 32-bit hardware?
I really wish Apple would replace Catbert as the head of Apple's Java
Strategy.
Cheers, Eric

we can only hope. Technically we not really meant to discuss such none
technical issues, but hell I don't care.
Apple have stated before that there will be no PPC64 Java 6 vm, but I
can't see them not supporting 32-bit Intel. What worries me is whether
or not the Apple Java team will be given the resources in order to
ship the Java 6 VM anytime soon.
Your options are limited:
- just keep waiting (boring)
- install soylatte (not quite 100% ready, but v.impressive)
- buy a new mac (expensive)
- install linux (not really the point of owning a mac )
