We may have discussed this before, but yours was an important post for me because I do not have an Intel mac to test on, so I thought perhaps the issue only existed on PPC macs. Nobody else had mentioned successfully reproducing it on Intel macs until you posted.

Still, I could not see a solution. For me the problem exists on a 32 bit intel MacBook Pro.

Try using /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences to switch to Java 1.4.2. For me, the problem only exists in Java 5.0.
