I run a number of Java applications in a 6 space setup in Leopard 10.5.2. As noted in previous reports, clicking on a dock icon or cmd- tabbing to a Java app only switches spaces if the app has more than one window open. Unlike prior reports, I can successfully drag Java apps from space to space via F8 interface. This is annoying to say the least. I was hoping maybe somebody had a fix or workaround or could explain why this happens. An "I feel your pain" from an Apple person would be great since I'd at least know someone at Apple was participating on this list.

This issue has been reported multiple times at http://bugreporter.apple.com , and we have designed a fix that we hope to release in a forthcoming Java update. If possible, could you please try Java SE 6 Developer Preview 9, available from ADC at http://connect.apple.com?

Greetings,

Many months later it seems like some Java applications are still having trouble with Spaces. I was able to get jEdit working by massaging it's Info.plist for 1.6+ (and removing it's MacOS plugin for an unrelated bug <http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1955173&group_id=588&atid=100588 >). Switching Oracle's SQLDeveloper to 1.6 on the other hand made no difference.

Oddly, with its involved launching infrastructure, Eclipse has worked fine with Spaces for me out of the box with Java 1.5. It uses a native binary to invoke a Java bootstrap app that then Runtime.exec's the main IDE process. SQLDeveloper is based on Eclipse, and has a similar launching process, though the code appears to be a re- implementation. I've been comparing each to the point of studying the decompiled bytecode for Oracle's closed-source launcher. I've tried numerous Info.plist/shell script/config file tweaks to try to align SQLDeveloper's runtime configuration for both the launcher process and the launched IDE process with that of Eclipse, but so far no luck as far as Spaces is concerned.

IDEA seems to have addressed their issue by setting a proper CFBundleIdentifier (<http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/ IDEADEV-23629>), but as far as I can tell jEdit and SQLDeveloper already have correct bundle identifiers setup.

Would anyone from Apple or otherwise be able provide some insight into what Spaces needs in order to identify and switch to a Java app's main window upon activation? Perhaps some details on that fix that is apparently now in 1.6 that has jEdit working where it doesn't with 1.5? How is it Eclipse works with 1.5? Is there any difference for SWT vs. Swing apps?

Many Thanks,

Ian
