FWIW, those symptoms exactly match a completely different problem, which is that there was a fairly brutal bug in the NVIDIA drivers on MacBook Pros. Check your console log after this happens and see if there are any messages like this:

NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel timeout

Checking my logs, it appears I haven't had any of these for a couple months now, so I suspect Apple must have quietly fixed this problem. Nonetheless, it's worth looking at your logs just in case...
