Boom! Decent speeds: it's the Sun Renderer that's broken. Apple's
changed the 2D graphics renderer, even in 1.5, to be Sun's by
default. The question then is: when did they do this?
Leopard, IIRC.
It's an OBTW-bomb in "Java for Mac OS X v10.5 Release Notes".
