HotSpot's -server option has always been available, but on PPC it didn't do much beyond adjusting some default heap sizes. On Intel 32-bit, -server should turn on the same optimizations as other platforms. In 64-bit, there is no client compiler, so everyone get's the "server" compiler, but with some thresholds tweaked to offer better startup time. If you pass -server in 64-bit, you should get the default settings as other platforms, without the "client-friendly" tweaks.
