RE: java -server jvm option:

Does the Mac JVM generally support the full suite of –XX flags?

An easy way to find out what optimizations it turns on is to simply use the use -XX:+PrintCommandLineFlags and it

will report the VM optimizations enabled.

How did I miss this?

- When did the java -server option become available?

- Does it have a real effect, i.e. heavier optimizations?

HotSpot's -server option has always been available, but on PPC it didn't do much beyond adjusting some default heap sizes. On Intel 32-bit, -server should turn on the same optimizations as other platforms. In 64-bit, there is no client compiler, so everyone get's the "server" compiler, but with some thresholds tweaked to offer better startup time. If you pass -server in 64-bit, you should get the default settings as other platforms, without the "client-friendly" tweaks.
