Have you tried the manual update <http://support.apple.com/downloads/Java_for_Mac_OS_X_10_5_Update_2>? Also, check for any errors that are printed to Console.app while you install the update. If that fails, the Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4 developer preview (available from <http://connect.apple.com>) should install on top of anything you have now. Do keep in mind though that you will have to download the manual updater for the final (non-DP) version, since it won't be provided to you in Software Update (since it thinks you already have it installed).
