You're leaving out the most obvious 64-bit architecture:
the one for the CPU you have.

That arch name is "x86_64", not "ppc64".

I was only going by what it said in the "man gcc" manual. It mentioned ppc64, but it didn't mention x86_64 at all. I tried it partly out of desperation, partly because the 64 made sense, even if the ppc didn't. (I didn't actually expect it to work. I was just trying every architecture mentioned in man gcc.)

Here's what "man gcc" says about the -arch option:

-arch arch

Compile for the specified target architecture arch. The allowable

values are i386, ppc and ppc64. Multiple options work, and direct

the compiler to produce ``universal'' binaries including object

code for each architecture specified with -arch. This option only

works if assembler and libraries are available for each

architecture specified. (APPLE ONLY)

Do you know who to contact about getting the man files updated? It might also make sense to revise gcc to produce x86_64 code by default on 64 bit machines.

Anyway, I've got it all sorted out now. It works on my machine, and I know how to make it work for any other machine I may need. So thanks for your help.
