Re: How to run Java SE 6 on Safari

Hi,
You can't run Java 6 Applets in Safari because Java 6 is 64 bit and Safari is 32 bit and applets run in the same executable space as the browser. Java 6 Web Start applications are no problem, however for Safari.
I have built a free 64 bit web browser (based on Apple's WebView) which does run Java 6 Applets. This web browser does not support 32 bit plugins. It is a very basic browser, but it does the job for testing Java 6 applets. Note that you must give it the full URL and it doesn't support bookmarks. If enough people ask for more features I may add them, however I see this web browser as a stop gap. I suspect Apple will eventually release a 64 bit version of Safari.
Please find the web browser for download at:

Hello,

Why Safari's Java Plugin doesn't recognize Java SE 6 which is installed
in my Mac OS X?
Safari uses Java 1.5.0_16 instead of Java SE 6.

- I'm making an Java Applet that shows MAC address.
Java SE 6 has convenient method to know MAC address, so I want
  to use it.
- My Mac is Mac OS X 10.5.6 (Intel) + Safari 3.2.1 (5525.27.1).
- I configured "Java Preferences" to prefer "Java SE 6 64-bit".
- Java SE 6 doesn't appear at my Safari's installed plugin page.
So that my applet catch "NoSuchMethodError" when calling
  NetworkInterface#getHardwareAddress().
- The appletviewer command, which is installed in my Mac OS X, can be
run on Java SE 6, and my Java Applet works well.

Are there any way to use Java SE 6 from Java Applet on Safari?

I tried Opera 9.64 and Firefox 3.0.7 as well, however, they also use
Java 1.5.0_16.

Wataru
