Re: Applets disabled by default on Lion?

My JVM didn't ask however if I wanted to use the applet.  Instead, the applet just silently did nothing.  No errors, no notifications, just a page that didn't function because the applet was never loaded.

What must be done to "trigger" the JVM into asking if I want to run the plugin?  Its a signed applet, and already has the browser popups asking if it should be given full control over your machine…

So its a bug then that Lion isn't notifying the user at all that an Applet is present and maybe it should be loaded?

Thanks,
Ben

There is a checkbox labelled "Enable applet plug-in and Web Start applications" in the "Java Preferences".  This is defaulted to being off.  So applets don't load, the user doesn't get prompted, it just looks like the web page is broken.

I might have thought this was a fluke, but two separate Lion installs that I did personally had this issue.

Why are applets defaulted to be off?  Can anyone else confirm this?

I confirm your observation on my lion install. Why….. java turns out to be a potential security leak more and more, switching off the feature might help a bit. Anyway, just like the automatic java installer, the JVM asks wether it should be enabled. Just click and you are fine….
