That is what QuickLook is supposed to do. However, the last time I looked at QuickLook the developer doc only described how to create a preview of a document. The doc also stated that obtaining QuickLook previews was an Apple-only API "at this time". I think that was when 10.6 first came out. It would be great to have an API (even native only) to obtain QuickLook document previews, e.g. to display in a file chooser accessory panel.
