I thought the installer wouldn't work at all for anything other than 10.7.

java -version should give you a correct result if it did.

You might try disabling everything else in Java Preferences and not just rely on the order.

There are non-Oracle builds at jdk7u4 that'll work 10.6.8, I'm using one, see below

the java_home command was recommended at some point.

Exactly whats going to happen with multiple JRE's from 10.7 on isn't exactly clear although Scott Kovatch has been talking about a/the 'shared' jre.

Java Preferences I'm pretty sure isn't supposed to continue being supported. I thought I saw something that made me think java_home probably wouldn't be either.
