This is insane! If it's possible to do this, WHY ISN'T IT THE DEFAULT?

Well, I guess then they would have to add a build step which runs redo_prebinding. Not that difficult I guess, but I've never tried it myself.

Why should developers have to spend all sorts of time chasing all over hell and gone and paging through supposedly obsolete and always vague documentation to figure out how to build a simple shared library, when it's downright trivial to do on pretty much any other platform on the planet including both the classic Mac OS and other Unix variants?

Well, yes, I'm confused at the seemingly contradictory attitudes to this. I suspect it has something to do with Apple moving the locations of their libraries around. At which point, you have to run redo_prebinding again on your prebound libraries. I think. Hrm, but that would apply to applications too, and none of the apps I have for 10.1 (mine or others') had any problems that I know of (or showed any launch slowdown) when I installed Jaguar. I will have to read up in more detail on ld and redo_prebinding and the whole issue.

What would be splendid is if everything just built prebound and the runtime did the equivalent of redo_prebinding the first time an app was run or a library was loaded. I used to think this was how things were done -- wasn't it the case with 10.0.1+ that apps would load slowly the first time, and then quicker thereafter?

Apple: Mach-O is broken. Fix it, or dump it. No matter which you choose, at the very least document it thoroughly, completely, and in ONE PLACE.

Well, you can't do prebinding with CFM PEF, so Apple says. I'm out of my depth here, though. It is definitely true that the Prebinding release notes seem out-dated and need to be updated for OS X 10.2, even if it's just to be touched and re-dated. I will ask some library developers I know what they have to say about the issue.
