All the old QD3D modelers are still out there. And Infinity allowed
exporting the 3DMF also. The textual format of 3DMF is open and extensible
and you can get source for reading it from the Quesa project (Open Source
QD3D -> OpenGL project).

All good points. In addition, Meshwork (http://www.codenautics.com/meshwork) is a $30 trimesh modeling app which exports several different formats -- OBJ is unfortunately not among them, but it shouldn't be hard to write a converter from one of the formats it does support to OBJ, assuming you understand the OBJ spec.
