In case anyone else (Ingemar?) is following this thread and looking for a good audio engine:
I ran into other issues using the software-based OpenAL implementation that Ryan Gordon had made available... no sounds playing on one user's Lion setup, and no sounds playing on my 10.4 ppc laptop when stereo panning was used.
Instead I found and fixed the bug in SDL_Mixer that was causing sound pops on my setup and a few of my tester's setups. So I've gone back to that, which seems to work well. The fix is in the current repository for SDL_Mixer online.
