NO_RECOVERY and software fallback

I don't think I understand software fallback well enough.

I have discovered that if I allow a GL screensaver to activate, I've got a reasonable chance of getting a gl error soon after in my app, always at the point when I call glTexImage2d. Nearby code reports that GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE has increased from 2048 to 4096, and attempting to use the the rectangle texture extension (I only test for it once, at initialization) suddenly begins to fail. This made me suspect that my renderer had silently switched underneath me.

So I need to understand software fallback better. How is it able to deal with textures I've already loaded with the rectangle extension? How do I get it to switch back to the hardware renderer? Is AGL_NO_RECOVERY save to use? (I always regarded it as a debugging tool that shouldn't be used in production code.)

Thanks.
