To be a "spaceball" in GLUT it needs to be a HID compliant device that reports 6 axis.  This moment I can't recall whether I have it looking for particular axis or not (I strongly suspect not).  So, without knowing more details I suspect your serial device is not a HID compliant device and thus can't be detected by the HiD services and thus GLUT has no idea it is there. 

Note that if you can find specs for (or reverse-engineer) the spaceball's protocol, writing an HIDDevice driver is relatively painless.
