errors following display sleep

For a long time now I've noticed that certain things don't work the same when the display goes to sleep. For instance, on my powerbook a query for GL_MAX_RECTANGLE_SIZE_EXT will produce a different response (typically 0) when the display is asleep; which my code spams to my debug window as an error. Up until now I've just lived with it, having more important bugs to respond to.

However, I now have a class of users who will be running my debug client regularly, and I'd like to be able to at least explain what is happening, even if I can't fix it. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what to tell them.

1) Can someone explain to me exactly what happens in Apple's GL when the display goes to sleep?

2) Also, I have reports the new G5 iMacs occasionally generate a visible error on display wake, with certain textures not getting restored properly. Are there any established techniques to use with Apple's GL that I can use to minimize this? Dumping and reloading all textures on display wake, perhaps?

Thanks.
