GL_ALPHA16 on GeForce 6800?



I'm working on software that currently depends on support for 3D textures with an internal format of GL_ALPHA16. This works on a Radeon 9800 and 6800 on Mac and PC, and on a GeForce FX 5900 and a GeForce 6800 on a PC, but on a 6800 on a G5 I appear to only be getting GL_ALPHA8.

I have a few questions:
(1) Are GL_ALPHA16 3D textures something I should be able to expect from modern hardware? (Will the G5 6800 support it in the future?)
(2) Is there any single-channel 16-bit internal format I could use on the 6800?
(3) Is there any way to query the actual internal format of a texture?
