Rendering 3D Objects from common files formats

Is it possible to take a set of objects modeled and saved in any of
the popular 3D formats (.obj, 3ds) etc. and render them in to an
NSOpenGLView?

For example, the teapot data is available in the Examples
(/Developer/Examples/OpenGL/Cocoa/GLSLShowpiece/glut_teapot.c). I
am looking to render something other than the teapot. :-) I see
all the interesting stuff that is out there but they are all in the
3ds or obj or other popular formats.

How can I get access to the raw primitives from these formats? Do
the files need to be converted to some intermediate format? If so to
what format?

Is this doable? Or am I going down the wrong path?

Suggestions?
