I've noticed that going back to at least 10.3.9, either GL_EXT_stencil_two_side or GL_ATI_separate_stencil have been supported by GL.

The wrinkle is that, typically, the EXT version was supported on Nvidia cards while the ATI version was found on ATI cards.

I've noticed that sometime since 10.4.3, the EXT variant is now also supported on ATI cards on Intel.

So this leads me to the question: are there limitations with EXT_stencil_two_side on ATI hardware that could cause performance problems? Are we better off using ATI_separate_stencil on ATI hardware even if EXT_stencil_two_side is present?
