Re: Max size of 3d texture

I have the option to build the 3d texture either as int 16, float 16
or float 32 - my preferred format would be float 32. Are you aware of
any major performance hits on using 3d textures in float 32 format?
It will at least eat a *lot* of video memory. A 128x128x128 32 bit float 3D
texture will require 64 megabytes of video memory. There may be more issues
too, or a silent fallback to software rendering.

128x128x128 is actually much more than I need, I'll probably just need about 40x40x40, which for float32 is 1MB. So video memory should really be no problem - I'm more concerned about the best format to use for the 3d texture, the format that will give best speed.
