It will at least eat a *lot* of video memory. A 128x128x128 32 bit float 3DI have the option to build the 3d texture either as int 16, float 16 or float 32 - my preferred format would be float 32. Are you aware of any major performance hits on using 3d textures in float 32 format?
texture will require 64 megabytes of video memory. There may be more issues
too, or a silent fallback to software rendering.
