freezing at login

I've had a lot of problems with stability during login, particularly with the summer 2000 iMacs. These Macs are all running OS 9.0.4 and MM 1.3. The server is running Mac OS 9.0.4 and ASIP 6.3.1 with the update applied. They freeze during about 1 of every 5 logins, and they always freeze at "Setting up user's preferences". 25 of the iMacs are on a wireless network (no problems with that network that I know of) and a few more are on the wired network (100MB/s); all connect to the MM server via IP (I've also turned the spanning tree protocol off on all ports, just to be safe). The workstations all have Prosoft's Netware client version 5.13 installed. All the utilities that I have have found no problems on the workstations or the server, and when I tell MM to check the users/groups database, it finds no problems.

Any suggestions? I cringe whenever I hear a student yell "my computer froze"...
