I like your outline of the details of the limits of 256 nodes per network.

However there are additional issues. Appletalk is somewhat declarative on
networks. Each appletalk device spends alittle time saying "This is my node
number and these are the services I offer." In addition to background sends
like this if any new machine comes up it asks if a setting is ok and others
respond. Routers also periodically query for similar info.

The end result is that as you total appletalk device count rises your total
background chatter rises and at some point impinges on network performance
everywhere - even across switches.

Also you can take into account that some places restrict the possible network
numbers because of wan issues.
