Re: LOST: DOCUMENTS and MANAGED PREFERENCES

After watching a student work for an hour on PageMaker--dutifully saving
every 5 minutes or so, I found with horror that her documents folder had
been deleted the next time she logged on. This was on a PPC 9600 with OS
7.6.1

I was able to replicate the conditions: student logs out, logs back in. Bam!
folders gone. I called Apple for the all important case number and they told
me that I had Apple's blessing to upgrade all my 7.6.1 machines to 8.1 They
said that the lost folders are a known issue, and that there is no way to
recover the data. They also said that not all 7.6.1 machines behave this
way, and they were surprised that my 9600 with built in ethernet lost data.

BTW, if another user logs in after the first initially logs out, that
apparently does some magical reset and the original user can log in without
losing folders...BUT if the original user logs in a second time without an
intermediate log in and loses data, it also seemed that anyone else logging
into that workstation loses data until an administrator logs in.
